Results of Fourth Annual Dragonfly Count Howard County, Maryland July 25, 2009 |
|
The weather was perfect for this year's dragonfly
count - sunny, upper 80's and light winds. Our weather
timing was perfect, too. Thunderstorms started two
hours after the count ended! Thirty-two people participated, including fifteen
who were new to the dragonfly count. Six of
the newcomers were volunteering as part of President
Obama's "Summer of Service Program". We tallied 44 species of odonates comprising
9200 individuals. Some of the better finds were Slender Bluet (which set a new late date), Swamp Spreadwing, Swamp Darner, and Swift River Cruiser. Two normally common species were incredibly
abundant this year: Citrine Forktail with an estimated
4000 individuals and Eastern Amberwing with an estimated
2200 individuals. Click on the white buttons above to find details about the count and the results. | |
